The gender swap trend is going viral! This popular trend is circulating on TikTok, YouTube, and other social media platforms.
It’s a pretty hilarious trend that does exactly what you think it does – it swaps your gender. People use filters from apps like FaceApp to swap their gender and see what they would look like if they were of the opposite sex.
Ever wondered how you would look if you were a girl, if you are a guy? Or a guy, if you are a girl? The gender swap filter can help.
If you want to get more views on TikTok, consider jumping on this viral trend bandwagon. In this article, I will explain the tools and filters you need to swap your gender on video and create viral clips for TikTok.
The short guide: Use FaceApp to swap your gender with the Gender Swap filter. Then, upload the before and after pictures to CapCut to create a video!
Step-by-Step Guide to Creating the Gender Swap Effect
Let’s go over the steps you’ll need to take to add the gender swap effect to your pictures. We will be using two tools for this purpose: FaceApp and CapCut, which are both downloadable from the app store on your phone.
1. Download and Install FaceApp
The first app we will be installing is FaceApp. You can download it here:
FaceApp is a photo editing app that quickly became popular due to its wide range of tools and filters.
Many people use FaceApp to beautify their photos. Its beautifying filters are largely what made it so popular, as they allow people to transform their pictures using advanced photo editing technology that can literally transform you without much work on your part.
That is what really sets it apart from apps like Photoshop, for example. There is much less to do on your end.
Once you download the app, you will need to allow access to the photos on your device. Once you do so, the app will automatically start scanning your gallery for selfies.
You can also click on Camera to take a picture or on Gallery to browse your gallery.
If you don’t have any photos, you can click on Demo to use one of the demo pictures, or you can click on Celebrities to apply transformations to pictures of celebrities.
For the purpose of this guide, I will be using the Demo feature.
2. Apply the Gender Swap Filter on a Photo Using FaceApp
Once you upload your picture or choose from one of the demo or celebrity pictures, you will see a wide range of filters at the bottom of the screen.
The filter you want is the gender filter, which is located smack in the middle, as shown in the above screenshot. I’m using the app on tablet mode, but on mobile, you might need to swipe a bit through the filters until you find it.
Click on the gender filter, and you will see several options.
I will first be choosing the Female 2 option. Just click on it, and the app will process the transformation, which usually doesn’t take longer than a couple of seconds.
See that? It’s that simple!
Let’s now try out the other Female option.
Which one do you like better?
If you are using a female photo, click on the Masculine option to transform the face into a male face.
Once you have chosen a filter you are happy with, click on Apply to be taken back to the editor. Then, click on Save to save the picture.
You will have several options. You can share the picture directly to Google Photos or social media, or you can click on Other to see more options, such as saving it to your files.
If you can’t find an option to save it to your files, just take a screenshot and crop out the rest of the screen!
Note that if you want to remove the FaceApp logo, you will have to upgrade to premium. Most people use the free version with the FaceApp logo, though.
3. Download and Install CapCut
The next app we will be using is CapCut. You can download it here:
CapCut is a video and photo editing app that uses AI to generate new pictures and create videos.
We won’t be using CapCut to create a gender swap filter but rather to create the video using the image you already created in FaceApp. However, I do want to mention that CapCut also has some face swap filters that might be useful in the creation of your videos for TikTok.
CapCut doesn’t have a gender swap filter per se, but it does have face swap filters. Here is how to find them, in case you’re interested in them for future videos.
- Click on Effects.
- Then, click on Photo Effects.
- Scroll through until you find the Face Swap option.
- You will then be able to select one of the available face swap filters, such as Angel Me and Baby Me.
They don’t transform your gender, but you can use these face swap filters on the picture generated by FaceApp to transform your face even more.
Let’s skip that for now, though.
What we want to do is use CapCut to create a TikTok-ready video showing our gender swap transformation.
4. Import the Original and Gender-Swapped Photos Into CapCut
CapCut is useful for turning pictures into a video collage.
What we’ll need to do is upload both your original selfie and the transformed selfie – the picture that you downloaded from FaceApp with the gender swap filter applied – to CapCut.
That way, you can create a short video showing your transformation.
To do that, click on New Project, and select the pictures from your gallery. Then, click on Add to add the pictures to your project and start working on it.
Make sure to select the original photo first and the transformed photo second.
5. Edit the Video to Create the Gender Swap Effect
Finally, we can start editing the video to create the gender swap effect. There are many tools in CapCut that you can use, and I recommend playing around with them a little bit to see what you can do.
For example, you can add transitions to transition smoothly between the original and transformed photo. You can add effects, overlays, text, audio, and more!
CapCut is a very handy video creator, and it doesn’t take much to figure it out. If you’ve ever used any photo and video editing app, you will find the process quite familiar.
6. Export and Share the Video on TikTok
Finally, once you’ve created your video, click on the upload icon at the top of the screen. CapCut will take a few seconds to process the video.
Fortunately, CapCut has a Share to TikTok button prominently displayed, which makes it super easy to share your video directly to TikTok. Note that you can add sound on TikTok as well, in case you didn’t add any sound in CapCut.
TikTok has its own editor, so you can add text, stickers, and more before publishing the video on TikTok too.
Isn’t that cool?
To summarize, here’s the process for creating a gender swap video effect using FaceApp and CapCut:
- Download FaceApp.
- Upload your selfie to FaceApp and use the gender swap filter to transform it. Download the transformed picture to your device.
- Download CapCut.
- Upload both the original and transformed picture to FaceApp to create a video.
- Share your video to TikTok.
It’s that simple!

Tips and Tricks for Enhancing the Gender Swap Effect

Now that we’ve discussed how to create the gender swap effect, the second part of this article will discuss some tips and tricks for enhancing the gender swap effect. These tips and tricks can help your videos get more views on TikTok and go viral, so don’t skip them!
Try Out Different Pictures
The gender swap effect uses artificial intelligence to swap your gender. AI is awesome, but it’s not perfect!
That’s why you will find that the effect works better on some pictures than others. It’s also why I recommend that you try out different selfies until you find one that produces good results.
Sometimes, the gender swap effect might look a little unrealistic. That’s ok – just try out other photos, and you will likely find that you get better results with some of them.
Experiment with photos taken in different lighting and settings, as well as from different angles. If you have glasses, try pictures with and without your glasses.
The AI algorithms may just work better on some of them.

Upload an Introductory Video

Previously, I talked about uploading both your original and transformed photos. However, you can also upload a video of your own as an introduction.
When using CapCut, you have the ability to select videos and pictures from your gallery and transform them all into one single video.
You can also add a video at the end.
Add Transitions, Animations, and Video Effects
I mentioned transitions, but I would like to mention them again. Transitions are effects that help smooth the transition from one slide to another.
There are all kinds of transitions you can add on CapCut, and any one of them will enhance your video and make it more watchable. You want to keep your viewers engaged and interested in your videos.
You can also add animations and video effects that will make your video more engaging and unique.
CapCut is truly a very powerful video editor, and I was surprised by its capabilities. I would recommend playing around with the possibilities there, because there is so much to cover that I can’t realistically go through all of them in this article.
Change the Ratio
On the bottom of the CapCut video editor, you will notice a Ratio option, which allows you to change the dimensions of the video. For TikTok, select the TikTok option, which is 9:16 (there is a TikTok icon there, so it’s easily recognizable).
If you plan on sharing the video to other social media platforms or sites, choose the appropriate option. Download different versions of your video for different sites you plan on sharing it to for best results.
Add Music or Audio
To make your video more engaging, add some sort of music or your own audio.
You can add music in both CapCut and TikTok. Adding engaging music, especially trending tunes, will help you get more views.
A lot of people are mindlessly scrolling through TikTok. They may very well scroll past your video without engaging, but if they hear a familiar tune they like, they might just stop and watch.
Alternatively, upload your own audio.
A lot of people are not comfortable adding their own voiceovers, so they add music and then use text captions instead.
Add Stickers and Text
To make your videos more engaging, add some stickers and text on top! Funny sticker emojis can catch people’s eyes.
You can also add some explainer text to explain the context of your video and draw people in. Don’t overdo it – short captions work best.
You can also use text to ask people about their opinions. Ask them to leave a comment in the comment section on TikTok.
The more comments you get, the more chance your video has of going viral!
Try Out Different Video Ideas
There are a lot of videos you can make with the gender swap filter. In addition to swapping your own gender, you can offer to swap the genders of your followers!
Many people simply do not know how to use the gender swap filter. They do not know about FaceApp and CatCut.
You can tell people that they can send in pictures of themselves, and you will create a gender swap effect for them in future videos! Perhaps you can make a video collage of several followers and their gender swap transformations – with their consent, of course.
It’s a great way to build community engagement and create long-lasting relationships with your followers.
Use Hashtags on TikTok
A great way to get more exposure on TikTok is to use hashtags. You will notice how a lot of people put hashtags in the video descriptions on TikTok.
Hashtags help people who are searching for trending topics find your video. They also make it more likely for TikTok to suggest your content to others.
For this particular topic, some possible hashtags to include are:
- #genderswap
- #faceapp
- #genderswapprank
- #sexswap
- #faceswap
- #genderswapchallenge
Engage With Your Viewers

People will comment on your videos. When they do, engage!
At the very least, like their comments. Liking every comment shows you are listening to your viewers and appreciate what they have to say.
Remember, they took the time to leave a comment on your video, so reward them with a like.
If you can, though, reply to comments whenever possible. This will boost engagement, because people will reply to your comment replies, and this could spark a discussion.
Ask people to share your videos with friends. Most of them won’t, but some will – it doesn’t hurt to ask in either case!
Collaborate With Others
A great way to get more engagement on TikTok is to collaborate with other TikTokers. You can create collaboration videos with other TikTokers who are also taking part in this viral trend and create a video showing your gender transformations together.
A good idea is to team up with a TikToker of the opposite gender and see how both of you would look after a gender transformation.
You can start by collaborating with friends who have TikTok channels. Even if both of your channels are small, you both stand to gain – you will each get exposure to each other’s TikTok followers.
If you don’t have any friends who are on TikTok, don’t worry. You can message other TikTokers who have taken part in this trend (use hashtags like #genderswap to find them) and ask them to collaborate with you.
If any TikToker comments on your video, it is likely they are open for a collaboration, so just ask!
Repost on Other Platforms

It’s a good idea to share your TikTok videos on other platforms. TikTok allows you to download videos from TikTok and share them (complete with your TikTok username).
Sharing your TikTok videos on Instagram can help you get more engagement, because I bet a lot of your Instagram followers are active on TikTok too – they just don’t know your TikTok username.
Another good idea is sharing your TikTok username in your Instagram bio. If you have many links to share, use a page like Linktree to share them all in one place.
You can also share TikTok videos to YouTube Shorts.
There are a lot of social media platforms, and if you really want to become a successful content creator, I recommend using as many as you can to build a broad base.
That way, you are also protected in case you get banned or locked out of TikTok – don’t put all of your eggs in one basket.
Conclusion
The gender swap trend is highly popular on TikTok, and a lot of content creators are hopping onto this viral trend and successfully leveraging it to increase engagement and get more followers.
You should too! After reading this article, you hopefully have all the information and tools you need to successfully capitalize on this trend and create viral videos for your TikTok channel.
