Discord is a popular VoIP and messaging app. It has a unique model, built around servers (communities) of like-minded people.
These communities/groups each focus on a different niche or idea, and there are both public and private groups. Video and voice chat, as well as livestreaming, are also available.
Today, I will be delving into user and revenue statistics about Discord that might surprise you. These stats show how popular Discord is in the United States and around the world and will give you an insight into how much money Discord is making.
Long story short: Discord is worth around $15 billion, raking in around $200 million a year. It has around 563 million registered users and gets around 800 million visits every month.

What Is Discord?
Discord is a social media and VoIP app that allows you to chat with others online. Its core features include video, text, and voice chat.
What sets Discord apart from other social media sites is that it’s focused on groups – also called servers – that anyone can set up. Most of the servers are private groups aimed for friends, students, coworkers, or family members to communicate with each other.
On text channels, people can communicate via text message, image uploads, and file uploads. Voice channels allow people to communicate via live video calling and screen sharing.
In addition to group channels, one-on-one communication via private messaging is possible. Text chatting as well as voice and video calling is available, and you can even hold group chats with up to 10 people (these are different from servers, which can have many people).
Discord was originally created for gamers, and it was intended to address the “discord” in the gaming community. However, it has since gone mainstream, and as I will show later, most people don’t even use it for gaming.
Unlike Facebook, for example, it doesn’t have news feeds. It also differs from sites like WhatsApp in that it focuses primarily on groups instead of one-to-one communication.
With that being said, let’s get into the statistics.

Discord Revenue Statistics
Let’s get to the bottom line – how successful is Discord, and how much money is it bringing in?
How Much Is Discord Worth?
Discord is valued at a whopping $15 billion!
Discord’s IPO is much anticipated, and it is possible it will come in 2023.
The company must be doing well, because not so long ago, it turned down an offer by Microsoft to buy it out for $10 billion, and it is now worth $5 billion more.
How Much Money Does Discord Make?
Discord’s main source of revenue is Discord Nitro.
Discord is free to use, like most social media platforms, but it does have a premium plan. There are actually two plans – Nitro Basic and Nitro.
Subscribing can give you access to features such as bigger file sharing and HD video streaming – see more details here.
In 2023, Discord will generate an estimated $207 million from Nitro subscription sales. That is just a bit less than what it generated in 2022 – $208 million, but it’s still higher than what it generated in prior years.
Nevertheless, growth of Nitro has slowed, with the biggest growth of new Nitro subscribers being back in 2019 and 2020.

How Much Is Discord Stock Worth?
Discord has not yet announced its IPO, which means that you can’t buy Discord stock just yet. However, as I mentioned, the IPO may be coming this year, so stay tuned.
Is there any way to invest in Discord before it goes public? Yes – even though Discord isn’t yet publicly tradable, you can still invest in it by joining a platform that allows you to invest in venture capital projects that are not yet open to the public.
Equitybee is a good example – it allows you to invest in Discord as well as other companies like Stripe. It connects employees at non-public startups (who have access to investing options) with investors who can help them exercise their stock options when they can’t afford to buy stock themselves.

Discord User Statistics – What You Need to Know
Now that you know how much Discord is earning, let’s get into the user statistics. How many people use Discord, and what type of people use it?
How Many Users Does Discord Have?
As of 2023, Discord has around 563 million registered users around the world. In 2017, it had only 45 million registered users around the world, an increase of more than 12x in just five years.
Discord experienced a growth of around 87 percent from 2020 to 2023. Its popularity is driven by its many useful features.
How Many People Visit Discord Every Month?
Discord has over 800 million monthly visits from its users around the world, on average. This number is steadily growing.
Note that visitors are not the same thing as users. Someone might be a registered user but only visit Discord once every few months, while other registered users might visit multiple times a day; Discord will also get visits from people who are not users but are following a link they found online.

How Many Monthly Active Users Does Discord Have?
I just said that the number of registered users doesn’t equate to monthly visits. Some registered users are not active and might not visit Discord frequently, if at all.
So, how many of Discord’s users are active at least once a month? It is estimated to be at around 154 million users in 2023, which is a slight increase from last year, but its growth is somewhat slowed down compared to its growth in 2020 and 2021.
What Are the Demographics of Discord’s Global Users?
Discord might have hundreds of millions of users, but who are they? What age group uses Discord the most, and is the average Discord user more likely to be male or female?
The biggest percentage of Discord users are people between the ages 25 and 34, making up 42 percent of global Discord users. However, people between the ages of 16 and 24 are not far behind, making up 22.2 percent of Discord’s users around the world.
What about gender demographics? Around 64 percent of Discord users are men, which is not really surprising when you think about it.
Remember, Discord is very popular among gamers, and the majority of gamers tend to be men. Things are changing, of course, but the gaming industry has always been skewed with males making up the larger percentage of users and females being in the minority.
There are actual scientific reasons for that. According to Harvard, gaming activates rewarding feelings in men more than in women, which is perhaps why men are two to three times more likely than women to become addicted to video games.

In Which Countries Is Discord the Most Popular?
Discord is the most popular in the United States, with the US accounting for the largest share of traffic driven to Discord. In April 2023, users in the United States accounted for almost 220 million visits to Discord.
Brazil is not far behind. That might be surprising at first, but remember that Brazil has a massive population, and while other countries like Russia and China have much larger populations, those countries also have their own social media sites.
In fact, Discord is one of the sites blocked by “The Great Firewall” – the Chinese government has banned many social media sites, Discord among them. You may have suspected that, but you may not have known that Russia banned it as well, which easily explains why Discord isn’t popular in those countries.
In any case, Brazil accounted for well over 100 million visits that same month, while the UK accounted for around 30 million visits.

What Are the Demographics of Discord’s US Users?
With the United States driving the most visits to Discord, what are the demographics of Discord’s users in the US? Fortunately, we have a lot of data on that, so let’s get into it!
The Percentage of Americans Who User Discord
Despite Discord being the most popular in the US compared to other countries, it isn’t really that popular when compared to other social media, messaging, and VoIP platforms.
Less than 20 percent of respondents in a survey said they used Discord. As you may expect, males were much more likely to have a Discord account – 21 percent of men said they had an account on the platform compared to only 11 percent of women.
How Discord Performs Across Political Lines?
You may have expected Discord to be more popular with right-wing Americans, but apparently, that’s not the case. Twenty-one percent of liberal respondents said they had an account on the platform, while only 10 percent of conservative respondents admitted to having a Discord account.
Meanwhile, 17 percent of people who described themselves as moderate said they used Discord.
It’s true that earlier on, Discord was more popular among the alt-right, and it was even used to organize the Charlottesville marches. However, according to Forbes, it later cleaned up its user base and focused on attracting a broader audience, which it was successful in doing – it is now mainstream.

How Discord Performs Across Ethnicities?
With that being said, it should no longer be surprising that Discord is actually not most popular among white people in the US. A survey revealed that only 14 percent of white respondents said they had a Discord account, compared to 16 percent of African-Americans.
However, Hispanic Americans were the most likely to have a Discord account, with almost a third of respondents (31 percent, to be exact), saying they had an account.
How Discord Performs Across Occupational Status?
Students in the United States were the most likely to have a Discord account. That shouldn’t be surprising, as many Discord servers are focused on education, with many student groups on the platform.
Sixty percent of students who partook in the survey said they had Discord accounts. Funnily enough, a quarter of unemployed people said they had an account on Discord.
Retired people were the least likely to use Discord, with only two percent of them saying they had an account. That is not surprising at all, considering most people who are retired are also older, and Discord is mostly popular among younger people (like students, for example).
How Discord Performs in the Gaming Community in the US?
I mentioned how Discord was popular among gamers, but just how popular is it really? A survey revealed that 36 percent – well over a third – of gamers who played video games every day or week used Discord.
Around 16 percent of people who played video games monthly or occasionally also used Discord.
Meanwhile, five percent of people who never played video games said they used Discord.
How Discord Performs Among Twitch Users in the US?
Another popular platform among gamers is Twitch, which people often use to livestream video gameplay and watch others play video games.
As such, there is some overlap between Twitch and Discord. Nevertheless, it seems that each platform has its own fan base, with some people simply preferring one over the other.
Eighteen percent of Twitch users had used Discord as well and liked it, and another 23 percent of Twitch users had tried Discord but did not like it.
What about Twitch users who did not yet try Discord? A third of Twitch users in the study said they planned on also joining or downloading Discord in the future, even if they had not done so yet.
How Much Time Are People Spending on Discord in the US?
According to Cloudwards, the average Discord user in the US spends 280.6 minutes on the platform per month. That averages to around nine minutes a day – which is quite underwhelming!
When you think about it, though, it makes sense. Most people who use Discord use it for messaging and chatting, usually with people in groups.
Therefore, they log in, read messages, and reply to messages. They aren’t watching videos like they are on Instagram or TikTok.
And, while Discord does have a livestreaming feature, it seems like most people prefer other platforms for that purpose. For example, gamers doing live streams often use Twitch.
Furthermore, according to Cloudwards, 78 percent of people now use Discord for non-gaming purposes or use it equally for gaming and non-gaming activities, so the percentage of Discord users watching live streams of gameplay is probably not as high as you think.
How Do People Feel About Discord in the United States?
Discord actually seems to be decreasing in popularity in the United States. According to a survey, the percentage of Discard users who enjoyed their experience on the platform went down, while the percentage of people who tried Discord but didn’t like it went up from four to 11 percent.
Only 16 percent of people in the United States who reported using messenger apps say they liked Discord, but that includes people who didn’t actually know about Discord or what it is. Forty-nine percent of respondents did have an awareness of Discord, and of those people, a third said they liked it.
Still, only 29 percent of that 49 percent actually used Discord. That suggests that some people liked Discord but liked other apps better and so didn’t feel a need to use Discord.

How Many Messages Are People Sending on Discord Every Day?
The number of messages exchanged on Discord daily is shocking – four billion, on average! One year after Discord was first launched, there were only 40 million messages exchanged every day – still a lot, but that’s a massive increase.
It still doesn’t come close to other messaging platforms, such as WhatsApp, which has over 100 billion messages exchanged every day. Still, Discord doesn’t have the same purpose as WhatsApp – it’s mainly used by people who want to join groups and communicate with strangers online who share common interests, not to replace SMS and voice calls with friends.
How Many People Are Downloading Discord on Mobile?
A lot of people use Discord exclusively on desktop, but it has a large share of mobile users as well. In the last quarter of 2022, there were around 24.5 million downloads of the Discord mobile app.
The number was highest in the fourth quarter of 2020, though, when the app got 47.6 new downloads.
How Many Servers Are Active on Discord?
Discord is based around communities, or servers, which cater to specific interests or topics. The estimated number of active servers per week is currently at 19 million.
In 2020, there were only 6.7 million servers active, which means the number increased by 180 percent since then.
That number accounts for both private and public servers.
Wrapping It Up
Discord remains a popular social media and messaging app. While its growth has slowed as more people got back to work and stopped staying at home, it has gone mainstream.
No longer is it exclusive to gamers or the alt-right. It is now popular in many different niches and among all kinds of people across party lines, although it is still more popular among students and younger people than the older population.
